Solving Salmon Farm Moorings – Huon Aquaculture

The brief

MoorTech were approached by Huon Aquaculture in 2012 to investigate a new mooring system for an aquaculture lease which they had been unable to moor successfully for 10 years, caused by the fact that a deep trench ran diagonally across the northern end of the lease, resulting in conventional anchors (concrete blocks and plough-type anchors) dragging into the trench.

MoorTech recommended the installation of N-Viro anchors, as they not only addressed the challenge, but also allowed for greater efficiency, due to their superior holding capacity over conventional anchor systems.

The response

MoorTech installed N-Viro anchors to the northern end of the lease in July 2012; these were bridled together in groups of 3 as a Crowsfoot formation to anchor the end of the lease.

Accuracy of placement, certification of anchor capacity, increased holding power and other monitoring options available with N-Viro anchors means that they will not move off the installed location. For all types of marine applications, this translates into an increase in safety  and cost.

The results

By using the N-viro screw anchor system, MoorTech were able to increase the useable area of this particular lease by approx one third, which translates into increased production.

Since first being engaged by Huon, MoorTech has installed some 170 N-Viro anchors, with more going into the future, which is a testament to the efficiency of the anchoring system as well as the professionalism displayed by the MoorTech team.

MoorTech continues to work proactively with Huon Aquaculture to continually refine and improve the system and to deliver benefits to both organisations. During the last 12 months, in conjunction with Huon, MoorTech has developed a 10-year maintenance-free N-Viro anchor system using heavier capacity steel components, which increases corrosion resistance as well as additional holding capacity.
